— Koskela

This is Koskela’s motto and underpins our approach to everything we do. Koskela was founded by partners Russel Koskela & Sasha Titchkosky in 2000, who left behind lucrative careers in the corporate world in a bid to create a company with a courageous mindset, strong social conscious as well as a creative and modern approach to furniture and design. Koskela is Sydney’s greatest design hub, located in a 2000m² 100-year-old warehouse in Rosebery, we proudly sell Australia’s largest range of Australian made and ethically produced homewares, furniture, lighting, art and juniors. In 2017 Koskela became a Certified B Corporation and part of the global movement of people using business as a force for good. We believe in more than the bottom line and want to be remembered for our commitment to have a positive impact.

Designed to
last a lifetime

We want Koskela products to last – whether for your workplace or home, or for educational or recreational environments – we design products that are destined to become classics and designed to last a lifetime.

Our original and considered designs have received a multitude of awards, with our Hoodie desktop, which won the Idea Awards in 2013, and our Mika Table, which won the Idea Awards in 2010. We guarantee our products with warranties and refurbishment services with a strong belief that great design and quality craftsmanship are paramount.

We limit our impact on the environment

Koskela strives to tread as lightly as possible on the natural world. We consider our impact on the planet in the way our products are made and what goes into them, as well as in the way we do business.

We source the very best materials with our focus on sustainability being imperative. We craft furniture and homewares in a way that is kinder to the environment and the people behind it. We strive to minimise our footprint on the planet and when possible upcycle and repurpose fabrics and materials. This is constantly evolving – as we embrace new technology, processes and materials when they become available. We are committed to taking new steps every year.

Rainforest Rescue

Another way we have chosen to protect the environment is through our partnership with Rainforest Rescue. We partnered in 2007, and have been supporting the Daintree Buy Back and Protect Forever project since. The Daintree Rainforest is one of the most diverse ecosystems on Earth but species loss and fragmentation are ongoing threats to the species that live there, as much of the Daintree is still privately owned. Koskela’s support helps with the purchase of freehold property to protect this land forever against development. So far, we have helped buy back over 1 hectare of land in the Daintree, to preserve this unique and beautiful place, and to keep it intact for generations to come.

We support local manufacturing

We make sure that our products are made in a way that does not impact the health and wellbeing of the workers making them.

All Koskela pieces are proudly crafted to order in Australia using quality materials and innovative techniques. Koskela is proudly Australian owned and made. We know how all of our products are made and we have a close relationship with the people who make them.  We have the joy of working with some of the world’s best manufacturers right here in Australia – true masters of their craft.

We believe that great design can be used to effect social change

We are deeply committed to social enterprise – using our design skills to empower Australian Indigenous artists and artisans to create new contemporary design products.

From 2017 onwards 1% of all Koskela product sales will go towards developing more of these products with additional Australian Indigenous communities. This allows the artists to continue to live a life they have chosen to lead, maintaining their traditional practices by creating an alternate income source, independent of any Government funding. This all started with Yuta Badayala in 2009, the first ever collaboration between a design company and Indigenous weavers. A Finalist in the Rigg Design Prize and IDEA Award shortlisted, this lighting and furniture range was exhibited at Milan Design Week, The National Gallery of Victoria, GOMA, The Powerhouse Museum as well as many works being specially commissioned for countless office environments, including Qantas HQ as well as the acclaimed Noma restaurant in Copenhagen. Koskela has a firm belief that Australia’s unique Indigenous culture is one that needs to be celebrated and acknowledged.

Our Rosebery Showroom

Selling Koskela’s own furniture as well as a range of sustainable and Australian made homewares, furniture, garden and art, as well as Koskela Juniors. Within this space Koskela also presents the Koskela Gallery, a carefully curated space with a new exhibition every month. Our gallery is a spotlight for Australian artists working across a range of media and styles. From sculpture to photographs, screen-printing to oil painting, we celebrate the variety and creativity of our homegrown art scene.

We gather on Country on which members and Elders of the Gadigal of the Eora Nation and their forebears have been custodians for many centuries and on which Aboriginal people have performed age-old ceremonies of celebration, initiation and renewal. We acknowledge their living culture and their unique role in the life of the region.

Koskela is proud to be the first furniture and homewares company in Australia to be a Certified B Corporation®.

B Corps are important because they inspire all businesses to compete not only to be the best in the world, but to be the best for the world. Certified B Corporations meet higher standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability.

At Koskela we use the power of markets to help tackle some of Australia’s most pressing social and environmental problems. We will always support ethical and sustainable Australian made products and are deeply committed to social enterprise.
