Arup is recognised as one of the leading engineering practices globally and are renowned for their innovative thinking. Recognising their current space no longer reflected who they are, stifled innovative thinking and collaboration, they wanted to create some experimental spaces that would enable their people to test new ways of working and broaden their outlook of possibilities. BVN was commissioned to work with Arup to create a pilot work environment within their existing tenancy that would inform their future move in 2018 to new premises and new ways of working.

Koskela worked collaboratively with BVN and Arup to create all the furniture and meeting huts for this space called the Workshop. The Workshop includes two highly flexible studio spaces with writable surfaces, projection and large polycarbonate garage doors that open to the collaboration space at the centre of the Workshop. It also incorporates a 3D Print Hut, model making table, library, big format suspended presentation screens, flexible movable tables, large kitchen table and picnic huts. Koskela included a custom graphic overlay based on traditional factory markings on the furniture, reinforcing the idea of a workshop. All the pieces created by Koskela enable the Workshop which is the centrepiece of the future model to be reconfigured, hackable and constantly changing.
