Introducing ‘Jute’, our new hand-knotted rug collection from Matias Moellenbach

If you’re after some fun, long-lasting and unique floor trimmings for your home, our latest collection of handcrafted, Danish-designed rugs might ‘check’ all the right boxes.

We always love discovering and collaborating with businesses that share our sustainable and socially responsible ethos. So we’re thrilled to be the exclusive Australian stockists of the ‘Jute’ rug range by emerging Danish brand Matias Moellenbach.

The brand, headed by its namesake designer, creates timeless, trend-neutral pieces, collaborating with craftspeople who make each individual product by hand.

“We love finding our kin in the design world, and we’ve found that with Matias Moellenbach,” says Koskela co-founder Sasha Titchkosky. “The ‘Jute’ rugs are created to the highest quality with the environment and social responsibility front of mind. Best of all, they’ll look absolutely incredible on your living room floor."

The ‘Jute’ collection is a fun, colourful range of checked rugs that are hand-knotted in Bhadohi, India, using 100% organic jute grown from a single crop. If you aren’t aware, jute is a natural, coarse fibre that’s mainly grown in tropical countries. It’s highly valued for its strength and durability.

The jute is coloured with vegetable pigment to create the expression and character of each rug. It’s then knotted in a directional pattern, making the rugs soft and comfortable to walk on barefoot – summer living, summed up.

As a brand, Matias Moellenbach owns up to its environmental and social responsibility. They only work with natural materials to create products with a very long lifespan, and avoid air shipping to minimise their environmental impact. They also work closely with suppliers to ensure that their workers around the globe have healthy, safe and balanced working lives.

As they put it on their website: “Contractors sometimes stretch themselves and their employees unmorally much to meet the demands of clients. effectively making factory workers work 12+ hours a day, 6 days a week in lure of extra wage. We don’t work that much, and neither should anyone else.” (As patrons of the 4-day work week, we wholeheartedly agree.)

The ‘Jute’ rugs join our growing collection of handmade, artisan rugs (you can learn how to choose the perfect one for your space).
